Innovative Paper-Based Packaging Steals the Show

The fourth quarter of last year saw several Pulp & Paper companies uphold their environmental commitments. The P&P industry is striving to create a healthier environment by introducing new and noteworthy advancements in paper-based packaging.

While some companies are allowing customers to purchase items without any packaging in larger quantities in order to reduce plastic waste, others are opting for paper packaging to make pre-packaged items more eco-friendly.

Some of the notable achievements from the past months are detailed here.

Cepi’s position paper

The European Federation CEPI has recently put forth a position paper on the EU’s certification scheme for carbon removals. This is the first of its kind to be implemented by a public authority.

The paper highlights the pulp and paper sector’s contribution to the biogenic carbon cycle as well as how certifications could help the sector expand further.

Wood products have the potential to store carbon and replace energy and materials from fossil fuels. This may result in a net positive climate impact of 806 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year, which is comparable to avoiding 20% of all EU fossil emissions.

Albéa’s paper bottle

Albéa Tubes has unveiled its first paper-based bottle, which features at least 50% FSC-certified paper, and was showcased at the Luxe Pack trade event in Monaco from October 3–5.

This bottle is composed of kraft and white paper and is structured in such a way that it helps to reduce the amount of plastic used in their packaging, as well as their carbon footprint. The paper-based bottle is currently in the proof-of-concept stage and is being produced by Albéa in Sainte-Ménéhould, France.

This marks Albéa’s expansion from solely producing paper-based tubes to now offering a wider range of paper-based products.

Tetra pak’s recyclable cartons

Tetra Pak, a major producer of packaging and processing solutions as well as a major player in the sustainability movement, has partnered with Chennai-based Earth Recycler to speed up the city’s recycling of Tetra Pak cartons.

This effort is intended to collect more used carton packages from Zones 7, 8, and 13 of Chennai, and instruct the garbage trade about the value of these packages, and create a distinct recycling route for them.

This marks Albéa’s expansion from solely producing paper-based tubes to offering a wider range of paper-based products.

This scheme is predicted to gather more than 13 million cartons for recycling in its first year.

Reckitt’s paper packaged dishwashing tablets

Reckitt has announced that, for its Finish dishwashing products, they will be carrying out trials of paper-based packaging, reducing the plastic in each stand-up bag by 75% and also reducing the lifetime emissions.

This special packaging will be available by the end of the year in 1,200 places across the country through a partnership with the French retailer Carrefour. Reckitt has estimated that switching to the new paper-based packaging will replace more than 2,000 tonnes of plastic every year, which is equal to almost 50 million plastic one-liter bottles.

Siegwerk’s water-based sustainable ink

Siegwerk India, a chief supplier of printing inks and coatings for packaging applications and labels, has declared the inauguration of its new generation of eco-friendly inks, UniNATURE, in the Indian market.

This move is aimed at reducing the number of microplastics present in inks while still providing an eco-friendly alternative to traditional inks that do not compromise the recyclability of paper and board packaging.

The UniNATURE line boasts high ink performance and color strength that is comparable to that of other water-based technologies and is suitable for printing at high speed on both coated and uncoated materials.

Moreover, it can be used for a range of paper and board applications, such as corrugated boxes, trays, and displays, fast food packaging, sacks and bags, cups, and wraps, and it meets the highest industry and legal standards.

Paper bottle gum mentos

A new paper bottle packaging for the Mentos Pure Fresh Gum line has been launched by Perfetti Van Melle, a confectionery company. Flavours like Cherry, Tropical, and Fresh Mint flavours will be made available using this new paper bottle package in 600 Co-op stores.

According to IRI, this change in packaging is predicted to bring about a reduction of 93% of plastic used for Mentos Gum. Alongside this initiative, the company has set a goal of eliminating 5,000 tonnes of unrecyclable plastic by the year 2025, as well as introducing disposal indicators on all consumer packs.

Kraft paper and other green alternatives are taking the centre stage and many brands are looking to make this transition to reduce their carbon and plastic footprint. Stay in touch with the greener side of the industry only with Coniferous.
